Central patio in an old Lanzarote house with a garden.

The central patio was large, but all of the planted areas were breaking open and damp. There was space to make a reception room near the entrance doors (behind the huge red geranium).
The old turret in the centre of the patio is the opening to the 'aljibe', or water tank.

The new room was created by a simple wall at the end of the patio with it's own set of doors. Note the long, narrow window which is made of four panels of old stained glass, brought from England. The garden was rebuilt, almost as before, but this time lined with fibreglass so it would never leak again.
Four concrete columns were added which support a new pergola for the climbing plants to do their thing.
The turret has been replaced with a simple lid for the water tank. This opens out a seating area in the centre of the garden areas.
