| Lanzarote, one of the northen islands of the archipeligo of the Canaries, sits about 80 miles off the coast of North Africa. We enjoy a warm, temperate climate for most of the year. Typical winter tempratures are around 20 degrees C. and in August it can rise to 30 or even 35. We do have winter and a few rainstorms though, so if you come to Lanzarote between October and May, bring some warm clothing and just hope you won't need it! Just a 4 hour flight time from the U.K., Lanzarote has been thoughtfully and tastefully developed thanks to its locally born and world renowned artist Cesar Manrique. It retains its own special character amongst the other, often more touristy, islands. The Canary Islands, are split into two provinces. The southern islands are in the province of Tenerife and the northern ones, Gran Canaria. The local people, who are believed to be descendants of the Guanche Indians, are amongst the most welcoming and helpful you could find. Especially on this island, they will go out of their way to help and make you feel at home. The main tourist resorts are Costa Teguise in the north, Puerto del Carmen and then Playa Blanca down on the south of the island. All of these areas, as well as the rest of the island, are kept beautifully clean and pristine and it is a pleasure to walk and drive around. There are of course many more attractions worthy of a visit if you are here for a week or two. It's easily understandable that many visitors just chill out around the pool or on the beach to unwind, but it really is a pity if you don't at least enjoy a tour around the island. After all, there aren't too many places where you can have a steak cooked over a volcano, or take a trip through an area that was in the sea only about 200 years ago. Visit The Cactus Garden, The Bird Park, The Fire Mountains, The Green Caves, and Jameos del Agua with its enchanting atmosphere and tiny white crabs, unique in the world. At the end of your day, whether it was on the beach, around the pool or on a sightseeing trip, you will find numerous eating houses in any of the tourist areas as well as out in the country. There are good quality restaurants and bars to suit all tastes and all pockets. Better still, see and experience some of these attractions this time then come back and see some more. If you've been to The Canaries already, but not to Lanzarote, you must try it, it IS different. The amazing amount of Europeans who keep comimg back so often that they buy their own place here, bears witness to the attraction of this wonderful island in the Atlantic sunshine. |
